You'll see a definite difference at realistic ranges (even as close as 200-300 yards). Have someone with a regular forward slung weapon turn a sling around their hand and then have them do it with a floated barrel. And you're downplaying accuracy?īarrel tension from a sling or rest is neither minimal (whatever that was supposed to refer to) and it certainly isn't myth. I do beleive if you are going to hang optic gear off the front of the weapon, its best to go with a good solid FF.ĭid you actually read this after you wrote it? Accuracy and reliability are the only real reasons to adjust anything on your weapon. I will say this, I have never invested the time to check for myself.

The heat factor ppl talk about is for full auto, over extended timeframes. And the accuracy you are gaining isnt anything huge over a well made upper.

FF rails are solid, and won't move.Īccuracy can be increased with a FF rail, but for many shooters who don't shoot at long distance, it won't be something that is really noticed.įrom what I have heard the only real benifit to FF is accurancy, everything else is either very minamal or myth. The non-FF rails are known to move when pressure is applied, and over time they tend to increase the amount of play as the spring inside the delta ring assembly compresses. A FF rail allows a shooter to mount items on the rail, and not have them shift, wiggle or move around when pressure is applied to the rail. How much real world difference it makes can be harder to judge. Non-free floating rails are available as well, but quality ones are aren't all that much cheaper than the FF rails.Īs for the differences between FF and non-FF rails, the easiest definition would be that one touches the barrel and can have an impact on accuracy, and one doesn't.

Midwest Industries Rail install and pictorial reviewĭaniel Defense Lite Rail install and pictorial review This is a lighter, slimmer rail, and sells for a little under $310.

The second is the Daniel Defense 7.0 Lite rail. The first is the Midwest Industries MI-20 rail, and sells for a little under $165. Below are two links that show the installation process of a one piece, and a two piece rail (both are free floating rails). Photos of my progress so far and the rest of the family Below. There are a lot of rails to choose from, and you can get a FF rail that is one or two piece. If I run the cars from start and don’t like it I’ll have to cut off the d ring and cap (or take bbl apart) to install the quad rail. If I decide I don’t like it I will have to take the bbl off and remove the fsb in order to switch it back.

If I run the quad rail from the get go I’ll have to cut off the handguard cap. BUT I also really like the ergonomics of skinny handguards as you can see in the photo below. I will also admit I’ve never left a quad rail on any of my guns long enough to get used to them. I’ve never really liked the bulkiness and weight of quad rails but I like the convenience of attachment points for lights grips etc and I very much enjoy the benefits off free floated bbls. Keep going back and forth in my head about whether to use this free float quad rail or just use the factory colt skinny CAR handguard.

Got a 14.5 M4A1 bbl assembly on the way to finish a spare parts/kiss build.
